Looking to the Cloud for Improved Efficiency, Productivity, and Flexibility

ESRB
  • The Challenge

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is a self-regulating organization that applies and enforces ratings, advertising guidelines, and online privacy principles for computer and video games and other entertainment software throughout North America. Because game release dates are geared towards seasons in which demand will be highest (e.g., summer vacation, winter holidays), the demand for ESRB’s services are also seasonal, with a change in application submissions that varies by more than 10x over the course of the year. Based on these fluctuations, ESRB required additional IT capacity to handle demand.
  • The Solution

ESRB partnered with Netsoft USA to help solve their seasonal performance issues. Netsoft’s proposed solution was to move the ESRB public web site to the cloud using Amazon’s Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2) services. ESRB can now dynamically respond to changing demands quickly and easily. As server technologies advance, ESRB can seamlessly take advantage of reduced costs and processing power offered by cloud hosting. As an added benefit ESRB can easily set up test environments as needed to assess software updates prior to production deployment; this eliminates the costs incurred in having a dedicated test environment.
  • The Bottom Line

ESRB can now efficiently serve an ever growing client base with increased productivity and efficiency. An added benefit is that ESRB’s operational costs (as compared to a classic ISP hosted model) are 40% less expensive with no commitment to fixed hardware systems that are quickly outdated.
